What are Makeup Primers?

by Madeleine Borgersen

Makeup primers are similar to a paint primer. They prepare the surface to allow your other cosmetics to do a better job. Better might be lasting longer, applying more evenly or changing your skin’s traits to be more luminous or less oily.

What are Makeup Primers?

Primers are the gatekeepers between your skincare and your makeup – locking in all the great ingredients from your serum and moisturiser and creating a smooth, even surface for your cosmetics.

There are different primers for every area of your face. From a general face primer for all over, to eyelid primers such as Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance or lip primers like MAC’s Prep + Prime, even eyelash primers to lengthen and thicken before applying your mascara.

General face primers can come in all different types too, each targeting a different skin concern. Maybe you have oily skin so you want a primer that will fight back any oil from creeping up through the day and ruining your foundation. Maybe you’re fighting a duller complexion with an illuminating primer or even a colour correcting primer to fight an uneven skin tone or redness.

Most noticeably primers smooth out pores and lines, creating a great canvas for your foundation (or eyeshadow, or lipstick, or mascara!). This smooth surface is what allows your products to perform their best, shine their true colours and last longer.

You might look at a primer as being a nice to have but honestly if you’re spending a pretty penny on your favourite foundation, picking up a primer is one of the best and easiest ways to make sure it will give you the best value for money.

Do you currently use a makeup primer? If so, what’s your favourite?
