What Order to Apply Your Makeup

by Madeleine Borgersen

Concealer before foundation? Eyes before skin? Whether you’re a slap of mascara and lip balm kind of person or a full face before walking out the door, the order you apply your makeup can make a difference. Here are our top tips!

What Order to Apply Your Makeup

After you’ve cleansed, toned and moisturised – not sure what order to apply your skincare either, we have it covered! You’re ready to get into the good stuff. But where to start?

Foundation First!

Some people like to go concealer first but I prefer foundation. A lot of skin inconsistency and smaller blemishes disappear with a little foundation which ends up with a more natural finish for you and a lot less money wasted on buying concealer after concealer. After applying a primer (that will help even out your skin and give your foundation super lasting power!) start applying your foundation in the middle of the face and work out, applying lightly on great skin areas like your cheeks and focusing a bit more coverage on some red or blemished areas like around your nose or chin.

Agree completely on foundation first – I’ve actually taken to using the slightly thicker foundation around the edge and the lid (using a small brush) as a concealer for spots and blemishes – it negates the need to match a concealer AND I’m a terrible blender. Doesn’t work very well around the eyes as it is too dry (and who needs crusty looking eyes!)

  2. Love Love Love. Applying foundation, then concealer is a total saver for me. I like having a natural finish and I realise my blemishes weren’t as bad as I thought! Love the website design, too 😉

    Great Post!
I’m also a foundation before concealer girl!
But loved the advice about doing the eyes before contouring and blush…will have to give that a go next time I do a heavier eye

  4. As I make a total mess when I apply eye shadow (holly mother of fallout), I always do my eyes first, and do them in the order you listed. That way I can just use remover to get rid of the mess, without destroying the foundation.

But that is also because for some reason on some days my shadow manages to fall all the way to my cheeks…clearly I am doing something wrong, LOL

Not at all hehe! Some are just more prone to fall out. I find the MAC are a bit better for this, so tend to have my favourite colours in those! x

I pretty much apply my makeup in that order as well! Definitely agree with foundation before concealer. I also feel like applying foundation over concealer would rub most of it off!
