The A-O’s of Antioxidants

by Madeleine Borgersen

Antioxidants are naturally occurring chemicals. They exist in our food and are often included in our skincare, but what are they exactly and why do they matter?

The A-O’s of Antioxidants

What do they do?

Antioxidants help to protect the skin against the damaging effects of free radicals.

What are free radicals? Things like sun exposure, pollution and other environmental impacts on our skin. Free radicals are what cause the skin to appear older – think wrinkles, sun spots, pigmentation or dull or lifeless skin.

How do Antioxidants help?

Our skin naturally contains antioxidants. They help to balance out environmental damage. They’re sort of like Jon Snow in that episode of Game of Thrones when the Wildlings attacked the Wall (spoiler alert!). However, much like the Night’s watch there are only so many antioxidants, and if we’re prone to a Saturday night smoke or a Sunday sun sesh, they can be outnumbered. This is when we need to send in some backup either by consuming antioxidant rich foods, like beans and berries, or opting for antioxidant rich skincare. Preferably you can do both!

What products contain Antioxidants?

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a skincare product that doesn’t have at least one brand with an antioxidant rich formula. Here are our top options too boost your skincare regime!
