Top 10 Skin Myths, Busted1. Staying in the shade means no sun damage! Just because you don’t feel those rays on your skin doesn’t mean the damaging UV isn’t getting to you. UV rays can be diffused and scattered but they still find your skin and as sun damage is a cumulative process we want to be protecting from any damage no matter how small. What’s this mean for you? Use UV protection every day of the year! Easy to do by introducing an SPF moisturiser to your morning routine. All skin ages the same Unfortunately those pimple faced guys and girls in high school will be loving themselves later in life. Oilier skin types tend to stay plump and fresh for longer as their oilier skin acts as a moisturiser and protection. Dry skin shows fine lines earlier so it’s important to keep the hydration and protection up! Collagen is a great anti-ageing add-on for all skin types aiding in the replenishment of youthful, plump skin as our natural creation of collagen fades. NeoStrata Renewal Cream ($49.95) Kick early signs of ageing like fine lines and pigmentation to the curb with this intensive anti-ageing cream. Skin Inc Collagen Serum ($62) Boost your skin's collagen and elastin levels with this potent marine collagen serum. Ole Henriksen Vitamin C Advanced Hydration (US$45) Brighten, firm and tighten with this transformative moisturiser! Top 10 Skin Myths, Busted3. You need to exfoliate every day For most skin types, daily exfoliation can actually aggravate the skin doing more harm than good. Try and stick to exfoliating the skin with physical or chemical exfoliators no more than 2 times a week. Bliss That’s Incredi-‘peel’! ($82.41) Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix ($29.95) Skinstitut Glycolic Scrub ($35) Top 10 Skin Myths, Busted4. Wrinkles are caused by frowning or smiling too much While some wrinkles can be caused by moving your face into certain positions you’re actually doing more damage while you sleep. If you’re a side or stomach sleeper your face can be pressed causing wrinkles in the skin. As you age the elastin in your skin decreases meaning it’s less likely to plump back up. Reduce these effects by sleeping on your back as much as possible and by opting for a crease-free silk pillowcase! Slip Silk Pillowcase ($79.95) Say good bye to bed hair, bed creases and wrinkles with a gorgeous silk pillowcase. 5. You can get bright skin with skincare alone. Dull skin is usually a sign of poor circulation. Opt for products that will boost your circulation like dry body brushing or skincare brushes and tools. Also check in with your doctor to check things like your blood pressure to ensure there’s no underlying medical issues causing low circulation. Foreo Luna ($249) Deep cleans your pores and stimulates circulation with it's hygienic silicone tips. 6. Stress doesn’t affect your skin Long periods of stress unfortunately do take hold of your skin situation. In times of stress the body puts more effort into vital organs like your heart and brain leading to less nutrients ending up in the lesser vital organ, your skin. Try and add relaxing activities like yoga, meditation and deep breathing to keep your skin in top shape. 7. Low-end products aren’t as good as high-end counterparts. If Pricey vs Priceline has taught us anything it’s that lower priced products can pack just as much of a punch as those with the higher price tag. Instead of brands focus more on ingredients and packaging. Things like pumps and opaque bottles are great at keeping the products fresh, and free from oxygen damage. Also ensure the ingredients you’re looking for are in the first few listed this means they have a higher percentage in the product make up. 8. If a product doesn’t work first go, move on. Unfortunately great skin is a routine, products need to be stuck to for 8-10 weeks before you can be sure they’re not for you. If you’re not seeing any adverse affects from a new product keep to it for a few weeks before handing it over to your sis! 9. Use toothpaste to get rid of blemishes quick! Hey we’ve all tried it! Unfortunately toothpaste can be super drying on the screen creating more of a problem. To kill blemishes quick opt for a specially made blemish buster. Origins’ Super Spot Remover Treatment Gel ($19) A gorgeous gel that clears up pimples and speeds up healing! Arbonne Acne Spot Treatment ($26) A clever, time-release formula that targets the cause of your pimple and says goodbye, for good! Mario Badescu Drying Lotion ($22) A mix of Calamine and Salicylic Acid to clear up and soothe even the blindest of pimples! 10. I’m in my 20s, I don’t need an eye cream! You may want to save on the skincare but introducing an eye cream to your routine especially after 25 can kick any fine lines that are starting to form to the curb. Trust us, you’ll thank yourself later! NeoStrata Bionic Eye Cream ($49.99) Hide under-eye circles and reduce puffiness with this great mix of cucumber, green tea and vitamins A, C and E. 1. I use to work in a hospital and one of the plastic surgeons once told me the only thing you can put on your skin to slow ageing is sunscreen. Sunscreen rules!
